In the Foundation Stage at Altmore Infant school we provide a range of learning experiences that enable your child to develop across the 3 prime areas,

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

And the 4 specific areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

The provision of exciting and stimulating resources allows children to actively learn through play, supported and extended by the EYFS practitioners. Children can choose to do their learning both inside and outside. Practitioners plan experiences which will support playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically. To find out more about the EYFS Curriculum please click on the link.

We have four nursery classes, two in the morning (8.55 – 11.55 am) and two in the afternoon (12.30 – 3.30 pm). Each nursery class is staffed by a teacher, a nursery nurse and a full time teaching assistant. You will be welcomed into the class at the beginning of the session to support your child to self register, choose a picture book to share at home and to play with your child while exploring the setting. Before your child starts at nursery we will visit them at home. This will allow us to introduce ourselves to the child and to begin to build links with your family.

Each child will be allocated a key person who will support your child in the transition from home to nursery. Staff are available at the beginning and end of each session to talk to you.
We have five reception classes, each staffed by a teacher and a full time teaching assistant.

Parents and children are able to go into their classroom from 8.55, self register and choose a picture book to take home to share. They will be able to share their prior learning with you and choose where in the setting they want to begin their days learning. Teaching and support staff are available to speak to you at the beginning and end of sessions.
When appropriate, parents will leave at 9.05, when a bell rings.

During the day your child will be able to select fruit and milk or water from the class snack bar.

In Yr R lunch time begins at 11.45. Children are able to stay for school lunch, go home or to bring a healthy packed lunch. Yr R children will spend a reduced time in the playground at lunch time, as they manage eating lunch away from their families. Familiar staff will eat with the children and support them during this time.

At Altmore all children will have free access to the outside area throughout the day. They will therefore need to wear appropriate clothing. A warm coat and waterproof shoes in terms 1, 2, 3 and 4 and sun hats and jackets in terms 5 and 6. Your child can bring Wellington boots to school and leave them on their peg for those very wet days.

Accidents do happen, so please bring a change of underclothes and spare jogging bottoms in a ‘wet bag’.

Children in the Foundation Stage must always be collected by an adult known to the staff. If for any reason you are unable to collect your child, you must make alternative arrangements for another adult to collect them and you must inform the nursery of the identity of that person.

All changes of address, telephone number or medical conditions must be notified to the school office immediately.
Throughout your child’s time in the EYFS you will be invited to attend information sessions, where we will give you ideas and tip’s about how you can support your children’s learning at home. You will also be invited to come to ‘Stay and Play’ sessions, where you can come and learn alongside your child. We value Parental support too, when we take the children on Educational visits.
